Abstract

This study discusses the analysis of Over Current Relay (OCR) protection coordination against short circuit faults in electric power distribution systems. The reliability of the protection system is highly dependent on the relay's ability to work quickly, precisely, and selectively in isolating faults without shutting down other areas that are still operating normally. In this study, system modeling is carried out using available network data, components, and OCR characteristics, then a fault simulation is carried out using ETAP software. Calculation of short circuit current and determination of relay setting parameters, namely current setting (Iset) and time multiplier setting (TMS), was carried out based on the inverse standard curve according to the IEC 60255 reference. The analysis results show that the relay on the downstream side works faster than the upstream relay with a coordination time difference of around 0.3–0.5 seconds. The resulting Time Current Characteristic (TCC) curve shows that the relay working sequence has fulfilled the selectivity principle, where the OCR closest to the fault point works first, while the upstream relay acts as a backup. Simulations also showed that the implemented OCR settings improved system reliability in responding to short-circuit faults and minimized the potential for widespread outages. Thus, proper OCR coordination has proven critical to maintaining the stability, safety, and continuity of power supply in the distribution network.
